Martha Gault Art Gallery proudly presents Omniglyphics by Professor Jon Shumway, on view from October 2 through November 2, 2023. Please join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, October 3 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Omniglyphics is a body of work developed by Jon Shumway, Slippery Rock University Professor of Art, while on a recent sabbatical from teaching. Responding to influences as broad-ranging as prehistoric petroglyphs and pictographs, Inca (and pre-Inca) tapestry and ceramic design, and early 20th century Dada collage; Shumway creates cryptic new forms and designs through the pursuit of a digitally-based collage process combining scientific and technological diagrams with environmentally derived textures. Through these constructions, Omniglyphics explores interactions and connections between varied lifeforms and life-related processes as part of a continuing thematic consideration of humanity’s relationship to the broader environment.Professor Jon Shumway has taught in the SRU Art Department since 1998. He teaches courses in Digital Media and in a variety of other studio areas. His works have been exhibited in galleries and film & video festivals regionally, nationally, and internationally. Some locations his works have been exhibited include the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Pittsburgh, PA, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, The Athens International Film and Video Festival, Athens, OH, Not Still Art Festival, New York, NY, Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY, Ohio Independent Film Festival, Cleveland, OH, Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA, Artist's Television Access Gallery, San Francisco, CA, and Mobius, Boston, MA.
